personal data protectionHere’s something for you to ponder: would you be willing to sell your personal data in exchange for cold, hard cash?

Most people are opposed to advertisers buying and selling their information, and understandably so. There’s a growing movement that seeks to upend this business by enabling consumers to sell their own information, cutting out the middleman.

If this sounds like a good idea to you, you might be surprised to learn that you’re in the minority. A recent surgery by Consumer Champion, a consumer protection website, found that a whopping 63 percent of respondents would never sell their information to advertisers and businesses under any circumstances. Three percent said they would sell, with 9 percent who’d sell for the right price and 7 percent saying they’d sell to the right advertiser.

Of course, if you use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any number of online services, you’re essentially already making the bargain to sell your information to advertisers—but instead of getting paid for it, you’re getting free use of their service in exchange. Still, the question of selling data in this way is an interesting thought exercise and it’s certainly worth exploring ways to give people more power over how their personal information is used by corporations.
