In the first major leak about the next-gen Samsung Galaxy S22, we’ve learned that the company has decided not to include a 3D ToF sensor in its new series of phones. These sensors use infrared light to collect depth information for portrait images and enable better AR experiences.
Samsung’s first flagship phone with a 3D ToF sensor was the Galaxy S10 5G, but neither the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy S21 Ultra include this sensor. Last year, Apple included the technology in its iPhone 12, but Samsung has decided not to use it this year due to a “lack of clear advantages.” Instead, Samsung’s System LSI division is slated to supply Chinese Android OEMs with its ToF sensors.
The good news in all of this is that despite the absence of the 3D ToF sensor, rumors are circulating that the Galaxy S22 will have an upgraded camera. Samsung is reportedly working with Olympus to develop this technology.
