5 Signs it's Time To Replace Your Cell Phone Battery - myTCR.com

They say that nothing lasts forever.  That is most definitely the case with smartphone batteries.  We haven’t tapped into an unlimited energy source yet, so for the time being we are going to have to tolerate their finite life expectancy.  Most batteries typically begin to lose capacity anywhere from 300-600 cycle counts. After that, things can get quite irritating. Not sure if your battery is bad or on the decline?  Here are a few surefire signs that it’s time to get that battery replaced.

1) It will not turn on

This is definitely the most obvious and easiest way to determine if your battery has simply had enough.  Like anything else without power, your phone simply won’t turn on. However, if you are still hearing notifications coming from your phone or experiencing any signs of power, but the display is completely black, then we most likely have an issue with the display and not the battery. There is also a chance it may be your charger, so be sure to try with a different charger to confirm it’s the battery.

2) Only showing signs of life when connected to a charger

If your phone is completely dead and we have ruled out all possibilities of the screen being damaged, then we are going to move to the next step.  Connect your charger to your device and observe for a few minutes. If your phone powers on and begins to work that’s great. Now disconnect the charger.  If it cuts off as soon as the charger is removed, then your battery is most definitely dead. This can be determined by the fact that the phone only functions when drawing its power from the charger.

3) Dying fast even after fully charged

On average, a modern smartphone (2015 or later) should be able to last anywhere from 5-8 hours from fully charged to completely discharged.  Of course this may vary drastically from user to user depending on a number of varying factors. If you use your phone frequently, use battery-draining apps, or forget to close apps when you are done with them, then this might bump you down to the 3-4 hour range.  However, if you charge your phone until it is fully charged, but the battery life seems to give out extremely fast (2 hours or less) or if it randomly cuts off completely, this is another sign that your battery is at the tail end of its life.

4) Overheating

You probably loved playing that childhood game ‘Hot Potato’ when you were a kid huh? That’s probably not the best game to play with your expensive smartphone now that you’re an adult.  The average healthy temperature range for a smartphone battery is somewhere between 68-86 degrees fahrenheit. Your battery can operate above this level, but it will have a negative impact on overall battery life and performance.  If your phone is hot to the touch, not only is that hazardous, but it is also another sign that your battery might be on it’s last leg.

5) Battery bulging

Last but not least, if your phone screen starts to unseat itself from the frame of the device, this is most likely a result of a swollen battery pushing the screen upwards.  Battery bulging is caused by overcharging of the battery’s cells. Like overheating, this is also a hazard. At this point, you have no choice but to replace the battery, especially before it cracks the screen!
