modern city with 5g networks

If you’ve been waiting to take the leap to 5G, it looks like this is the year to do it. There’s a whopping 70 5G-enabled devices in the works right now, making it easier than ever to take advantage of these lightning-fast networks. Included in this roster of new smartphones is the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, which now comes standard with 5G connectivity.

For the Apple loyalists among us, you’ll be pleased to know that all signs point to the release of a 5G iPhone sometime in 2020. The 5G iPhone will use the Snapdragon X55 modem chip designed by Qualcomm, but in a departure from the last several generations of iPhones, Apple is working on designing its own antenna for 5G rather than relying upon Qualcomm’s version.

We’ve written a bit about 5G before, but just a quick primer: this fifth-generation wireless network offers revolutionary speed, but the rollout is an ongoing—and sometimes slow—process. How fast is 5G? It’s a jaw-dropping 10 to 100 times faster than your current connection. If you’re old enough to remember dial-up modems, it’s like upgrading from that to broadband. We’re definitely eager to see 5G roll out more widely in the area so we can test it out ourselves.
